Core Values

Resilience

Embodying the Korean idiom 칠전팔기 ("fall down seven times, get up eight"), KAYLA instills resilience in Korean American youth by nurturing perseverance, adaptive leadership, and growth through challenge. The tiger, an enduring symbol in Korean culture of strength, courage, and unwavering spirit, reflects this mindset, reminding us that true leadership is defined by rising after every fall.

Shared Stewardship

Shared stewardship means caring for our communities, values, and future together, across generations, cultures, and identities. Represented by the Korean Friendship Bell, the magpie (a symbol of good news and unity in Korean culture), and the bald eagle (a symbol of freedom and responsibility in the U.S.), these icons reflect the harmony and mutual respect that define KAYLA’s commitment to collective leadership.

Courage

KAYLA is committed to nurturing courageous leaders who stand firm in their values, even when faced with challenges. We believe that true leadership is tested not in easy moments, but in times of pressure, doubt, and moral uncertainty. This spirit is reflected in the Jindo, South Korea’s national dog, admired for its unwavering loyalty, quiet strength, and fearless resolve.

Wisdom

Embodying the Korean idiom of (거거거중지 행행행리각) "learn as you go, gain wisdom by doing", KAYLA empowers youth to learn by doing. Through hands-on fellowships, member-led projects, and real-time mentorship, participants grow through experience rather than instruction alone. We believe wisdom is cultivated through action, reflection, and meaningful engagement with others.
